The Acting Prime Minister Viliame Gavoka has stated that the government is committed to supporting the revival and sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry. He added that the government is prepared to face challenges head-on and acknowledged the challenges from land lease issues to the loss of EU preferential pricing.
“From the complexities surrounding land lease renewals, which have posed significant obstacles for our farmers, to the impact of the expiration of EU preferential pricing, which has dealt a substantial setback to the livelihoods of our hardworking cane farmers—these challenges have tested the resilience of our industry.”
Gavoka mentioned that the government is dedicated to supporting farmers through initiatives like increased cane payments and production-boosting programs and urged collective efforts to elevate the sugar industry for a brighter future.
