The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced a coordinated national response to address the rising number of HIV cases in Fiji.
Minister for Health, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, highlighted the need for joint action between government agencies, frontline health workers, and communities to curb the spread of the virus.
“We must work together to tackle this major public health challenge,” Dr. Lalabalavu said, revealing the creation of a dedicated HIV/Sexual and Reproductive Health Unit to lead the country’s efforts.
Chair of the National HIV Outbreak and Cluster Response, Dr. Jason Mitchell, noted that Fiji’s HIV prevalence is shifting from a low-level to a concentrated epidemic, with potential to escalate further if left unchecked.
Dr. Mitchell warned that untreated sexually transmitted infections are also contributing to the spread of tuberculosis, underscoring the importance of public awareness, behavioral change, and access to proper treatment.
“This is a matter for everyone. HIV, tuberculosis, and STIs must be taken seriously by all Fijians,” Dr. Mitchell stated. He urged for a compassionate, non-discriminatory response to those living with HIV.
The government’s response includes scaling up prevention, testing, and treatment services while working to reduce stigma and promote community engagement.
