The Fiji School of Medicine (FSMed), now part of the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (CMNHS), celebrated its 140th anniversary with a grand ball that brought together alumni, staff, and students to honour the institution’s legacy.

Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ratu Antonio Lalabalavu, officiated as Chief Guest and paid tribute to FSMed’s role in shaping generations of health professionals across the Pacific.

“FSMed gave us more than academic knowledge. It gave us values discipline, humility, respect, and above all, service,” Dr Lalabalavu said, recalling his own experiences as a student.

He spoke of the challenges of medical training, from sleepless nights and demanding clinical rotations to friendships that continue to endure.

Highlighting the school’s proud history, Dr Lalabalavu officially launched the FSMed 140th Anniversary Memorial E-Book, a legacy project capturing milestones, leadership, and alumni contributions.

“This e-book is a valuable record that will inspire current and future generations of medical students, health professionals, educators, and researchers,” he said.

The Minister noted that FSMed’s legacy extends beyond Fiji, with graduates strengthening health systems across the Pacific region and beyond.

The event not only celebrated FSMed’s 140 years of achievement but also looked to the future, reaffirming the school’s role in advancing healthcare and education in the region.
