Iosefo Nayagodamu, originally from Bouma Village in Taveuni, is using his business success abroad to give back to his homeland. Now based in the United States, he founded the Pasifica Islanders Kava Bar in San Francisco; a space designed to bring Pacific Islanders together, fostering connection and conversations about supporting their home communities.

Nayagodamu’s vision is rooted in using agriculture, particularly yaqona farming, as a means of empowering Fijian families. He encourages landowners to invest in their children’s futures by planting yaqona, noting that even small efforts could lead to meaningful returns over time.

His ongoing engagement with Fiji’s agricultural sector was further strengthened through a meeting with the Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, alongside senior ministry officials. The discussions focused on expanding market access for Fijian farmers and fishers in the U.S. market; a move that could boost local incomes and provide long-term sustainability.

The government delegation’s earlier visit to the U.S. explored the growing demand for kava and the potential role of diaspora-led businesses like Nayagodamu’s in linking Fiji’s producers with international markets.

Tunabuna commended Nayagodamu’s commitment to supporting grassroots development in Fiji, noting that such initiatives not only uphold cultural identity but also create real economic opportunities for local families.

Nayagodamu’s journey highlights the potential of diaspora-led partnerships in fostering development and resilience for Fijian communities, combining cultural pride with economic progress.
