Kilikali, a settlement located in Nasinu on the outskirts of Suva, collected over 900kg of recyclables between June and December 2023.
Their efforts to remove waste from entering and polluting the environment did not go un-noticed – recycling advocates from the settlement received the Advocates Influencing Mindsets and Mentoring Agents (AMMA) Award for 2023.
According to a press statement from the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), Kilikali is the first informal settlement to implement PRF’s ‘I Recycle Hub’ program.
The 31-year-old settlement, home to 268 residents who migrated from maritime and rural areas in search of job opportunities, now stands as a beacon of hope for similar communities and is testament to how sustainable practices and recycling advocacy can make real and meaningful difference.
PRF founder Amitesh Deo said they were proud to honour the recycling advocates of Kilikali for their exceptional commitment to recycling advocacy.
“The I Recycle Hub program is not just about recycling; it’s about empowerment and inclusivity,” he said.
“Through this initiative, we aim to break barriers and ensure that every individual, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to contribute to a cleaner environment.”
Pacific Energy Chief Financial Officer Jullien Leraille said they were delighted to be part of such a transformative program.
“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to advocates of Kilikali Settlement, recipients of the PRF’s AMMA Award 2023,” he said.
“Their passion and dedication exemplify the spirit of sustainability, and we are delighted to support their efforts in creating a positive impact within their community.”
