To mitigate risks, Land Transport Authority enforcement officers will maintain round-the-clock shifts, and conduct snapchecks and road safety awareness campaigns nationwide over the Easter holidays.

“Communities are urged to remain alert and prepared throughout the Easter Public Holiday weekend, adhering to road safety advisories, and exercising vigilance on the roads,” says LTA Acting chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa.

He says cooperation with LTA enforcement teams, police officers, and stakeholders is vital, alongside a call for a mindset shift towards road safety rules among drivers, pedestrians, and passengers.

Mr Rokosawa says the LTA is urging road users to maintain heightened vigilance and exercise caution on the roads during the long weekend.

He says the essence of Easter, characterised by compassion, forgiveness, and the triumph of light over darkness, should extend to daily interactions, including road usage in Fiji.

“The Authority plays a pivotal role in ensuring safe roads, safe drivers, and safe vehicles in Fiji, contributing to the well-being of all road users. The LTA will continue to uphold safety standards, emphasizing the need for responsible and cautious driving behaviours this Easter weekend.”

Mr Rokosawa says Fiji’s roads serve as arteries connecting communities, facilitating commerce, and fostering social cohesion.

However, the same roads could also pose risks if not navigated with care and vigilance.

He says every driver, passenger, and pedestrian plays a vital role in maintaining road safety.

“We must prioritise the safety of fellow road users, demonstrate empathy, and consideration. Practising responsible driving behaviours is not merely a legal obligation but a moral imperative.

“It entails obeying speed limits, adhering to traffic rules, and respecting the rights of others on the road. It means refraining from reckless maneuvers, distractions, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. By exercising patience, tolerance, and mindfulness, we can create a culture of safety where every journey is safeguarded.”
