Nine Hospitalised, two on life support after Gas Explosion at Zamzam Restaurant

Nine of the gas explosion victims at the Zamzam Restaurant in Samabula this afternoon, are currently admitted at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital after sustaining burns from the fire.

The Ministry of Health says two of the burn victims are currently on life support while the rest are on Inhalation Burn Treatment and Facial Burn Treatment.

Doctors at the Emergency Department are doing their utmost best in treating the burn victims.

The Ministry will continue to provide an update as it comes through.

Staff who witnessed the blast say the incident has left them shaken.

Customer Service Officer Dileleah Grace described the moment the explosion occurred, saying it was a frightening experience for everyone.

Grace said about 30 staff were on duty at the time, with several working in the kitchen when the explosion happened.

Owner of Chubb Safety Fiji Limited, George Bernard, was among the first to respond, assisting in containing the fire before firefighters arrived.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion is underway.
