The Pacific Farmer Organisations (PFO) has appointed Aileen Burness as its new Chair, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the organisation.

Mrs Burness is the third person to hold the position since PFO’s establishment 12 years ago.

Her appointment comes at a symbolic time, as the organisation prepares for 2026, which has been declared the United Nations International Year of the Woman Farmer.

A well-known figure in Fiji and across the Pacific, Burness has built a strong reputation through decades of involvement in agriculture, with a particular focus on floriculture.

Her leadership is recognised for being practical, results-driven, and grounded in a strong work ethic.

She also continues a legacy of service to the sector shared with her late husband, Don Burness, who was instrumental in strengthening farmer organisations and supporting agricultural development in several Pacific nations.

Burness takes over from Minoru Nishi, who has served on the PFO board since its inception.

While stepping down as Chair, Nishi will remain on the board, ensuring stability and continuity during the transition.
