Fiji is strengthening its role in regional fisheries management following Cabinet’s endorsement of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) among members of the South Pacific Group under the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency.
The agreement will see Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Samoa and Tonga work together to enhance cooperation on the sustainable management of South Pacific albacore tuna, a key resource for Pacific economies.
Through the partnership, member countries aim to advance common priorities in fisheries management, strengthen their collective voice on regional issues and promote the responsible use of marine resources.
The MOU will also support closer collaboration during major fisheries discussions and negotiations at both regional and international levels, including meetings of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
South Pacific albacore tuna continues to play an important role in supporting employment opportunities, economic development and national growth across Fiji and the wider Pacific region.
Officials say the strengthened partnership and commitment to science-based fisheries management will help Pacific nations safeguard their interests while ensuring the long-term sustainability of ocean resources for future generations.
