“Whatever you set your mind to, you can achieve it.”
This was the message by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka while congratulating Weightlifting Fiji on their achievements at the Commonwealth Championships in India at a reception held in Suva yesterday.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the support of the families and emphasised that preparing for such an international event can be challenging, yet they were able to succeed with the support and prayers of their families.
On behalf of the Coalition government and all Fijians, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the Australian Government for supporting the team throughout the tournament that was held in New Delhi, India.
Australia’s Chargé d’Affaires to Fiji, Stuart Watts congratulated the team for their great performance of the athletes and congratulated them on their achievements.
Watts highlighted Australia supported the 10-member delegation participation (travel, accommodation, meals and associated fees and uniforms too).
The funding was made possible through the Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program (DAP). DAP supports community led initiatives and project with development focus.
Weightlifting Fiji President Della Shaw-Elder acknowledged the support from the Australian High Commission that enabled them to compete in India.
Elder highlighted the support of the Australian government as timely as they were facing financial difficulties.
She also acknowledged the Coalition Government through the National Sports Commission for their support.
Meanwhile, the seven member squad (between ages 15-26years) won five gold during the competition.
-Leyna-May Domonatani Dugu won two medals: a Gold in the Junior 87kg division and bronze in the 87kg division.
-Taniela Rainibogi won Gold medal in Senior 109 kg division
-Nehemiah Elder won Silver medal in the Youth 73 kg division
-Miriama Taletawa won a Bronze in the Junior 71 kg division.
