Na Turaga na Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has been elected as the new President of Fiji.
This decision was made following a vote in a special parliamentary sitting today.
The Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, nominated Ratu Naiqama for the presidency, while the Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, nominated the Chairman of the Ba Provincial Council, Ratu Meli Tora.
Ratu Naiqama secured the position with 37 votes, while Ratu Meli garnered 16 votes.
