The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai has said that the RFMF has decided to convene an independent Board of Inquiry to investigate the matter regarding RFNS PUAMAU in Fulaga, Lau.

He says the decision to initiate the independent BOI stems from the significant monetary value of the affected platform, valued at around $20m and the recent commissioning of RENS PUAMAU into the Fiji Navy Fleet within the last month.

He adds that it is imperative for the RFMF to demonstrate commitment to transparency and accountability by thoroughly examining the mishap in terms of processes and procedures.

Whilst acknowledging the internal investigations conducted by the Fiji Navy, he says that the RFMF believes that an independent BOl will enhance the thoroughness and objectivity of the inquiry, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the incident.

Major General Kalouniwai stated that the primary goal is to prevent similar occurrences in the future and uphold the highest standards of safety and operational excellence within the Fiji Navy.

Cooperation of all stakeholders as the RFMF embarks on the independent investigation process is highly appreciated and updates and information regarding the findings will be disseminated in due course.
