With the aim of providing quality internet connectivity and communications with rural and maritime communities in the country, the Government has provided a license to Starlink, a leading provider of low Earth orbiting satellite systems in the world.

Starlink is a leader in satellite internet technology, and introducing it into Fiji’s telecommunications market will be a great boost, says the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications Manoa Kamikamica.

“All we’ll do is to provide the license, which is already issued, and Starlink will come into the country, which will be launched in the next few months”, Kamikamica said.

He says this also serves the government’s efforts in connecting the unconnected population in maritime communities, without incurring expensive costs.

“Some communities we’ll probably have to build towers, while some we’ll have to resort to satelite, and Starlink offers a faster transmission”, he said.

Kamikamica says, this is done in a matter of looking at what is fitting in the right places.
