Farmers in Fiji’s Central and Western Divisions received valuable training in sheep and goat farming today during the Small Ruminant Farming Practices Field Day held at the Nawaicoba Research Station in Nadi.

The event, hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, featured visiting U.S. Army veterinarians from the 72nd Medical Detachment, Veterinary Service Support (MDVSS), who participated as part of the Pacific Partnership 2025 initiative. The team provided practical guidance on animal health, disease prevention, nutrition, and sustainable farming practices.

Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, welcomed the collaboration, highlighting its role in improving Fiji’s livestock productivity and food security.

“This partnership reflects the strength of Fiji and the United States working together to build a more resilient agricultural sector,” said Tunabuna. “The knowledge shared today will empower our farmers to reduce losses and improve livestock management, which is crucial for community food security.”

Captain Levi Jackson from the U.S. Navy emphasized the importance of training in small ruminant farming to ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.

“Empowering farmers with the right knowledge ensures better livestock health and productivity. We are honored to work alongside Fijian farmers and contribute to strengthening their livestock management practices,” Captain Jackson said.

The field day forms part of wider efforts under Pacific Partnership 2025 to build regional capacity in disaster preparedness, veterinary services, and agricultural resilience across the Indo-Pacific.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Fiji’s livestock sector by providing ongoing training and technical support for farmers nationwide.
