A farmers’ group from Bureiwai, Ra is proving that success can be built at home without seeking overseas employment opportunities.
The Yaukawa Cluster Farmers Group, made up of 13 members from Soa Village; including 10 men and three women – has been steadily growing its agricultural venture. Their farming journey began in Bureiwai, where two of the group members reside.
Determined to remain in Fiji and build livelihoods locally, the group has expanded its vegetable cultivation to include cucumbers, tomatoes, Chinese cabbage, long beans, chillies, and sweet corn. They first generated income from long beans and chillies, earnings that allowed them to purchase a second-hand digger and a twin cab vehicle to transport their produce to nearby markets.
This success has translated into steady income growth for the group’s members. Weekly payments have increased from $100 to $130, and most recently to $160 per member. Their target is to reach $200 by August and $600 by December this year.
The group also employs one member as a dedicated digger operator and another to manage transportation and market scouting, ensuring their operations remain efficient. Their next goal is to acquire a new digger to further boost productivity.
Beyond financial gains, the Yaukawa Cluster Farmers Group wants to inspire more young Fijians to see agriculture as a viable and rewarding career path. By creating opportunities locally, the group hopes to demonstrate that sustainable success is possible without having to work abroad.
Their message is clear: with commitment, teamwork, and vision, a better future can be cultivated right at home.
