In a closely watched by-election in Penrhyn, independent candidate Sarakura Tapaitau emerged victorious, clinching the seat previously held by her husband, former deputy prime minister Robert Tapaitau.

The by-election was necessitated after Robert Tapaitau was removed from office following a conviction.

Sarakura Tapaitau’s win comes amidst a competitive race, with the Cook Islands Party candidate Vaine Wichman trailing closely behind with 34 votes.

Tapaitau’s narrow victory, with a margin of three votes, underscores the significance of each ballot cast in the election.

With this win, Sarakura Tapaitau adds to the tally of independent seats in the Cook Islands Parliament, which currently consists of 24 members.

The Cook Islands Party-led coalition government maintains a majority with 14 seats, including three independent seats.

The outcome of the by-election reflects the dynamic political landscape of the Cook Islands and sets the stage for potential shifts in parliamentary dynamics.
