After more than two decades, the chiefly title of Tui Lau was filled with the installation of Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara.

The installation has been marked as a significant moment for the Lau Province and the wider Fijian chiefly system.

The installation ceremony, held in Tubou, Lakeba, was attended by hundreds, including high-ranking regional dignitaries such as the King and Queen of Tonga and the Māori Queen. This underscores the cultural and historical ties shared among Pacific nations.

The title of Tui Lau, traditionally held by leaders of high chiefly status within the Lau Group, had remained vacant since the passing of Ratu Tevita’s father, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, in 2004.

Ratu Sir Kamisese was not only Tui Lau but also Fiji’s founding Prime Minister and President, deeply respected as the Tui Nayau and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau.

In his first address to the people following his installation, Ratu Tevita Mara expressed both humility and resolve.

“As your chief, I will guide you through, and this is my vow to you, my people,” he declared solemnly.

He acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with the role.

“You have bestowed upon me a huge responsibility, one of the Vanua,” he said.

“The ceremony today marks the preservation of our unique culture, one that defines our identity, and you have shown that this morning.”

Ratu Tevita also issued a call for unity and cooperation as Lau faces the future.

“Let’s work together, let’s unite and share the burden,” he urged.

The ceremony not only reinstated a chiefly title but symbolized the resilience and continuity of Fijian traditions, as well as the enduring importance of chiefly leadership in fostering unity and cultural preservation.
