Fiji and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening climate cooperation and advancing preparations for upcoming Pre-COP discussions following a meeting between Lynda Tabuya and Barbara Plinkert yesterday.

The talks focused on the longstanding partnership between Fiji and the EU, particularly in areas such as climate action, climate finance, and ocean conservation initiatives across the Pacific region.

Ambassador Plinkert reiterated that climate change remains a key priority within the European Union’s cooperation framework with Fiji and other Pacific Island countries, noting that a large share of EU regional funding continues to support climate-related programmes.

Minister Tabuya acknowledged the EU’s ongoing support, saying Fiji highly values the partnership as the country prepares to host several important regional and international climate engagements in the months ahead.

Discussions surrounding the upcoming Pre-COP meeting also centred on Fiji’s goal of ensuring Pacific Island nations achieve meaningful outcomes on critical issues including climate finance, ocean access, and efforts to maintain the global 1.5-degree climate target.

Ambassador Plinkert confirmed that senior European climate representatives are considering attending the Pre-COP meeting and expressed interest in supporting youth-led climate initiatives and side events connected to the discussions.

The meeting also covered Fiji’s climate resilience efforts, including renewable energy development, rural electrification, shipping decarbonisation projects, and climate-related research programmes funded through EU assistance.

Both sides agreed to maintain close collaboration as Fiji continues advancing its climate agenda at both regional and international levels.
