Fiji has taken a significant step in its environmental governance with the official launch of three key national biodiversity policy instruments aimed at strengthening conservation and sustainable resource management.

The announcement was made in Suva during a launch event led by Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya.

The newly introduced frameworks include the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2030), the National Invasive Species Framework Strategy and Action Plan (2026), and the National Access and Benefit Sharing Policy (2026).

Developed through extensive consultations with communities, stakeholders, and technical committees, the initiatives form a core part of Fiji’s long-term environmental reform agenda. They are designed to strengthen biodiversity protection, safeguard traditional knowledge and biological resources, and address the growing threat posed by invasive species to ecosystems, food systems, and livelihoods.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change highlighted that the policies reflect a collective national effort involving government agencies, development partners, civil society, and local communities.

Minister Tabuya emphasized that the launch represents shared responsibility in protecting Fiji’s natural environment, calling for unity in safeguarding the country’s future and ensuring sustainable use of its biodiversity resources.
