Calls are growing for faster action to clear derelict ships in Suva Harbour, following concerns raised after the recent sinking of the Spirit of Altruism.

Minister for Publid Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlights that the removal of old and abandoned ships in Suva Harbour has been too slow, with nearby coastal communities raising concerns over the impact on their fishing grounds.

He adds the sinking of the Spirit of Altruism has added to worries in areas like Navukavu and Nadonumai, where families depend heavily on fishing for their daily income.

Tuisawau emphasizes that plans are also being considered through the national budget to help remove the vessels within the next two years, as concerns over damaged fishing areas continue.

The line minister says protecting fishing grounds and clearing hazardous wrecks must be prioritized moving forward.
