Cabinet has approved the development of Fiji’s National Ocean Accounting System along with a Technical Roadmap aimed at improving the management and planning of the country’s ocean resources.
The initiative will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in collaboration with the Fiji Bureau of Statistics and the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership.
The system is expected to combine economic, environmental and social data to strengthen national planning, support climate obligations and improve sustainable ocean governance.
Officials say the Ocean Accounts framework will enhance coordination of marine-related information, improve reporting on both national and international commitments, and support Fiji’s access to climate and blue economy funding opportunities.
The initiative is also expected to help safeguard Fiji’s marine resources for future generations through more sustainable management practices.
