The newly introduced Forestry Act 2025 is expected to reshape forest management and conservation efforts across the country through major reforms aimed at strengthening sustainability and accountability.
While speaking in Parliament, Minister for Forestry Hon. Alitia Bainivalu said the legislation establishes a modern framework focused on environmental protection, responsible forest management and greater involvement of landowners in the sector.
The new law expands beyond timber harvesting and places stronger emphasis on biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, forest rehabilitation, research and fair distribution of benefits.
Among the major reforms are the creation of a Forestry Advisory Council, an independent Forestry Tribunal, updated licensing procedures, tougher enforcement measures and a new Code of Forest Practices to guide forestry activities nationwide.
The Act is also expected to support long-term economic development while ensuring forests remain protected for future generations.
