The Fiji Council of Social Services has called on the government to urgently establish an independent energy taskforce, warning that delays in Fiji’s electrification initiative are costing ordinary citizens.
FCOSS Executive Director, Vani Catanasiga says the energy task force can oversee renewable energy initiatives, including solar.
Catanasiga has urged government to look beyond hydro and move quickly on solar energy, which she described as a more logical and practical option that can start at the local level. She warned that Fiji cannot continue to ignore the energy transition and cannot afford to rely on fuel subsidies indefinitely.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister had announced that EFL is progressing an investment
program of approximately $2 billion, which will be one of the largest infrastructure investments in our nation’s history.
Immanuel says government is supporting EFL in accessing affordable financing and climate investment capital to help lower long-term electricity costs for consumers
