The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a Damaging Heavy Swell Alert for the Mamanuca Waters, Southwest Viti Levu Waters, Kadavu Passage, Koro Sea and Lau Waters as hazardous sea conditions are expected to develop from tomorrow night.
According to the weather office, a high pressure system interacting with a low pressure system located far southwest of Fiji is expected to generate damaging swells across the affected waters.
Swells are forecast to reach heights of up to 4 metres, with wave periods of up to 16 seconds, creating dangerous conditions at sea.
The anticipated conditions could produce powerful breaking waves in open waters, strong rip currents along low-lying coastal areas, and increase the risk of small boats and other vessels capsizing.
The Fiji Meteorological Service is advising mariners, fishers, coastal communities and the public to avoid unnecessary sea travel, exercise extreme caution, and stay informed through the latest weather updates and official advisories.
