Fiji’s Under-16 men’s side began their OFC U-16 Championship campaign on a winning note after defeating New Caledonia 2-0 in their Group A opener at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

The young Fijians controlled much of the contest, enjoying the majority of possession and creating the better scoring opportunities to claim all three points.

Fiji took the lead in the 13th minute when striker Zaman Shah capitalised on a defensive mistake. After winning the ball just outside the penalty area, Shah drove a powerful left-footed shot past New Caledonia goalkeeper Jeremy Fere.

The advantage doubled four minutes later after Shah’s free-kick caused problems inside the box. Rayyaan Mohammed’s strike rattled the underside of the crossbar before Isoa Baselala reacted quickest to head the rebound into the net for Fiji’s second goal.

Fiji continued to apply pressure for the remainder of the first half, with both Shah and Maikeli Ratuove testing Fere, who produced several important saves to keep New Caledonia within reach at the break.

Despite several changes by New Caledonia after halftime, Fiji remained composed in defence and restricted their opponents to limited chances.

Although the second half produced fewer attacking opportunities, Fiji comfortably managed possession and saw out the match to secure a deserved victory.

The result gives Fiji an ideal start to its Group A campaign as the side continues its push for a place in the semi-finals of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship.
