Twenty-seven farmers from five villages in Bua have received practical training aimed at improving ginger production and creating greater opportunities through commercial agriculture.

The two-day programme was held at Sawani Village and brought together farmers from Nasolo, Nasavu, Nasawana, Sawani and Saolo in the Tikina of Nadi.

Participants were trained in key aspects of ginger farming, including soil management, land preparation, crop care, pest and disease management, and harvesting methods suited to local conditions.

The programme also included hands-on field activities, giving farmers the opportunity to put their new knowledge into practice through land preparation, planting and crop maintenance.

Both women and men participated in the training, supporting broader involvement in farming and livelihood development across Bua Province.

Ministry of Agriculture officers from the Central Division worked alongside their counterparts in Bua to provide technical guidance and demonstrate practical ginger production methods.

Agriculture Technical Officer for Namosi, Asenaca Vaga, and Agriculture Assistant for Dawasamu, Ilaisa Gonebure, noted the strong turnout, particularly during the practical sessions.

They said the hands-on approach allowed farmers to develop skills they could directly apply on their own farms.

Ginger is considered a high-potential crop in Fiji and can provide farmers with an avenue to diversify their production while strengthening household income through commercial farming.
