Medical Services Pacific will expand its Na Bula E Dua programme to more schools next year, following the completion of its pilot initiative in six schools.

MSP Country Director Dr Kesaia Robinson says the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has confirmed support for the programme’s expansion, which will target schools in the Central and Western divisions where the need is greatest.

The pilot programme, which began last year, focused on understanding students’ knowledge and identifying gaps in their awareness of HIV and substance abuse.

Robinson says the project has highlighted significant gaps in education and the need for continued involvement from all stakeholders.

She says the programme was developed in response to Ministry of Health and Medical Services statistics showing the impact of HIV on young people, particularly adolescents aged between 10 and 19.

Robinson adds stigma remains a significant challenge when discussing HIV, particularly in schools and communities.

She says continued awareness is needed to ensure young people and communities understand HIV transmission, treatment and available support services.
