The Fiji Labour Party is calling for the immediate public release of the full Constitution Review Commission report and draft constitution.

In a statement, Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the constitution belongs to the people and must be debated openly to have legitimacy.

The party has raised concerns over reported proposals involving the selection of the President, the role of the Great Council of Chiefs, and the secular character of the State.

Chaudhry said the Prime Minister’s assurance that Cabinet has not yet adopted the recommendations does not address public concerns.

He also criticised the decision to exclude the media when the Commission presented its findings and draft to the President.

He said any constitutional review must preserve equal citizenship and fundamental rights, warning that changes perceived to weaken these protections could create further tensions in Fiji’s multi-ethnic society.
