The Vodafone Fijiana 15s have kicked off their Japan Rugby Challenge campaign in winning fashion, holding off a determined Japan side 15-12 in Fukuoka.

Fiji took a 10-7 lead into halftime after tries from fullback Ivamere Rokowati and Varanisese Qoro gave the visitors the early advantage.

Japan responded strongly in the second spell and kept the pressure on the Fijiana, but Fiji found the decisive moment through Atelaite Ralivanawa, whose crucial try ultimately proved the difference.

The hosts launched a late surge in search of a match-winning score, however Fiji’s defence stood firm to deny Japan any further points and secure the three-point victory.

The Fijiana enjoyed the upper hand for much of the contest, making 17 entries into Japan’s 22-metre area compared to the hosts’ six. Fiji also dominated the breakdown battle, winning 116 rucks to Japan’s 79.

Their control of the match was reflected on the scoreboard, with the Fijiana leading for 74 minutes of the encounter.

The 15-12 result gives the Vodafone Fijiana 15s a confident start to their Japan Rugby Challenge campaign as they continue preparations in Fukuoka.
