Maintaining affordable and dependable electricity services remains a major focus for the Fijian Government as it looks to improve the financial position of Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) and prepare for the country’s growing energy demands.
Minister for Finance Esrom Emmanuel highlighted the importance of strengthening EFL’s financial sustainability while responding to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs’ review of the company’s 2025 Annual Report in Parliament.
He acknowledged several challenges affecting the company’s financial performance, including rising fuel prices, lower hydroelectric power generation caused by prolonged dry weather, increasing electricity demand and higher borrowing levels.
Despite these pressures, EFL recorded an after-tax profit of approximately $22 million in 2025. However, its borrowings also rose from $225 million in 2024 to $287 million in 2025.
Minister Emmanuel said the Government’s focus was not limited to addressing immediate financial difficulties but also ensuring EFL was financially equipped to meet future demands.
He emphasised that a stronger financial foundation would allow the electricity provider to maintain reliable services, contribute to economic development and make the necessary investments to meet Fiji’s future energy requirements.
The Ministry of Finance will continue engaging with EFL and relevant stakeholders to improve financial management, support responsible investment and ensure electricity services remain dependable and affordable for Fijians.
