In a powerful statement at the Global Recycling Day celebration held at Churchill Park in Lautoka on March 18, 2025, Deputy PM Manoa Kamikamica emphasized that “Recycling is no longer an option—it is a necessity.”

Addressing the pressing environmental challenges of urbanization and growing consumerism, DPM Kamikamica highlighted the crucial need to embed sustainability in the national development agenda.

The event, organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation, saw the launch of the pioneering “I Recycle” program, which positions Churchill Park as the first sports facility in Fiji—and the region—to implement a comprehensive waste management initiative.

“This is a groundbreaking achievement that sets a standard for other public facilities, sports venues, and businesses nationwide,” said Kamikamica, urging others to follow suit.

He also praised Lautoka for successfully implementing structured waste management solutions, encouraging other cities and towns to adopt similar strategies.

The Deputy Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to building a sustainable economy, stressing that sustainability and economic development must go hand-in-hand.

“We are focused on fostering green businesses and promoting sustainable entrepreneurship,” he added.

At the event, DPM Kamikamica also signed the Pacific Recycling Foundation’s Blueprint to address the growing waste management crisis.

He called on all Fijians to take responsibility for reducing waste and embracing recycling efforts.

“We need real action, real commitment, and real change,” he concluded.
