Concerns are mounting over the potential rise in the cost of basic household goods, as consumers in Fiji brace for the impact of global economic pressures already reflected in rising fuel prices.

Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, Seema Shandil, said that while immediate government intervention may not yet be necessary, authorities must remain vigilant.

Shandil stressed that close monitoring of market conditions is critical at this stage, with government expected to be ready to act if price increases become widespread or unjustified.

She added that clear and timely communication will also play a key role in preventing panic-driven consumer behaviour.

From the Council’s perspective, the risk of increasing prices is real, particularly given Fiji’s heavy reliance on imported goods and exposure to global supply chain disruptions.

The recent rise in fuel prices is seen as an early indicator of broader cost pressures that could soon affect everyday household items.

Shandil is urging consumers to start preparing now.

She said households should adopt careful budgeting practices and prioritise essential spending as uncertainty grows.

Comparing prices across different retailers, planning purchases ahead of time, and avoiding panic buying are among the key strategies being recommended.

Consumers are also encouraged to track their spending, keep receipts, and report any suspicious pricing to the Consumer Council.

Shandil emphasized that while large-scale economic shifts may be beyond individual control, small and informed decisions at the household level can make a meaningful difference in managing financial pressure during this period.
