The Ministry of Health & Medical Services (MHMS) has announced heightened surveillance measures for Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI), in response to increasing reports of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China. 

While the World Health Organization (WHO) has not declared a state of emergency over the outbreak, Fiji’s MHMS is closely monitoring the situation to ensure early detection and prevent potential spread within the Pacific island nation.

HMPV, a virus that causes symptoms resembling the common cold, typically leads to mild illness but can be more severe for vulnerable groups, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. 

Although most cases are mild, the virus can lead to more serious illness in certain individuals, particularly those with compromised immune systems.

The virus is highly contagious and spreads through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. Transmission typically occurs through:

– Coughing and sneezing

– Physical contact such as shaking hands, hugging, or kissing

– Touching surfaces or objects that have been contaminated, such as door handles, keyboards, and toys

Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, and antibiotics are not effective against the virus. Most cases are self-limiting, and individuals can manage symptoms at home with rest and hydration. Severe cases may require hospitalization, particularly for those with respiratory distress or underlying health conditions. In cases where a secondary bacterial infection occurs, antibiotics may be prescribed.
