Rice farmers in Wainikoro are optimistic about expanding production following the handover of a new rice harvester by the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry.

For members of the Chandmari/Wainikoro Rice Farmers Cooperative, the machine represents more than just new equipment; it is a tool that will help improve efficiency, reduce harvesting costs and strengthen their efforts to build a sustainable rice industry in the district.

The cooperative, established in May 2025, consists of 10 farmers from the Chandmari and Wainikoro communities in Macuata.

United by a common goal, members have been working together to revive rice farming by bringing idle land back into production and creating new income opportunities for local families.

Currently cultivating more than 100 acres of farmland, the group grows both improved rice varieties recommended by the Ministry and traditional varieties that have long been part of the area’s agricultural history.

By pooling their harvests, members are able to access larger markets and supply rice to Fiji Rice Limited.

Farmers say the harvester will significantly improve harvesting operations by reducing labour requirements and minimising crop losses in the field.

They believe the machine will also encourage more landowners to participate in rice farming and help increase overall production in the area.

Members of the cooperative have welcomed the Government’s support and acknowledge the responsibility that comes with managing the equipment.

They have committed to maintaining the harvester and ensuring it is available not only for cooperative members but also for neighbouring rice farmers who may require harvesting services.

The group’s long-term plans include expanding rice cultivation onto additional idle leased land, acquiring more machinery and eventually providing affordable harvesting services throughout the district.

Farmers believe these efforts will contribute to Fiji’s food security goals while creating employment and income-generating opportunities for rural communities.

With continued technical support from the Ministry, they are confident that rice farming in Wainikoro can become a stronger and more commercially viable industry in the years ahead.
