The new terminal at Waiqele Airport in Vanua Levu paves the way for air connectivity and improved travel experiences.

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad highlighted this, during the ground-breaking ceremony, of the new terminal this week.

For 51 years, the old terminal facility, the Adi Laisa Terminal, served as a vital gateway to the Northern Division.

The new terminal, which will replace the ageing Adi Laisa Terminal built in 1973, is set to be a modern, single-story facility covering approximately 1,000 square meters.

The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Professor Prasad highlighted the rapid economic growth in Labasa, citing major investments such as Extra Supermarket, Damodar North, Ramada Hotel, and commercial expansions by Vinod Patel, RB Patel, and Carpenters.

He also emphasised the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, including a major road project in partnership with China and a proposed solar farm initiative through Food Processors Limited.

“The Northern economy has been bustling, and both business and consumer activity have been on the rise.”

He said new terminal is not just a construction project; it represents our commitment to enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure and connectivity for the benefit of every citizen.”

He acknowledged Fiji Airports Ltd. for its role in managing both international and domestic airports, ensuring vital air connectivity for Fijians. Key stakeholders, including landowners, contractors, and private-sector partners, were also acknowledged for their contributions to the project.

The Acting Prime Minister reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s vision for a modernised, well-connected Fiji, emphasising that the new terminal is a significant step toward achieving that goal.

The new Waiqele Airport terminal is expected to play a crucial role in fostering economic development and strengthening the Northern Division’s connectivity with the rest of Fiji and beyond.
