Wati Mocevakaca and Ashmita Prasad were the only two from the Fiji National University’s College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to graduate with a Master’s Degree yesterday. The two proudly obtained a Master of Science in Agriculture.

Prasad’s research was based on sheep, exploring their grazing behaviour, growth performance and the health status of Fiji’s remarkable sheep pastures treated with diatomaceous earth.

Mocevakaca’s research focused on the dynamics of dairy production and antimicrobial susceptibility and patterns.

Prior to embarking on their master’s journey, the two had graduated from the same institution. Prasad completed her Bachelor of Science in Animal Husbandry whilst Mocevakaca graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry.

Their academic journey was not free from challenges. Ms Mocevakaca said one of the challenges she faced was trying to balance her personal and academic life, but with time management and family support, she was able to overcome it. Ms Prasad, on the other hand, navigated the unfamiliar waters of research under her supervisor’s guidance, ultimately thriving in independent inquiry.

In a field traditionally dominated by men, the twos journey is paving the way for future generations of women to stamp their mark in the agriculture field.
