Fijians are being encouraged to contribute to the national Constitution Review process as consultations continue across the country.

Chair of the Constitution Review Commission, Mr. Sevuloni Valenitabua, said public input is critical in helping shape the nation’s supreme law.

He stressed that every submission received during the consultation period will be reviewed carefully as part of the amendment process.

Mr. Valenitabua said community participation gives citizens a sense of ownership over the Constitution and helps ensure it represents the views and aspirations of the people.

He also urged individuals who may feel their opinions carry little weight to still take part, assuring them that all submissions will receive equal consideration.

The Commission has identified public awareness as an important element of the review, noting that criticism surrounding the 2013 Constitution was partly linked to limited public engagement during its drafting.

Issues raised during consultations include proposals to reintroduce aspects of the 1997 Constitution, concerns regarding the use of the term “Fijian,” and discussions on constitutional identity.

However, Mr. Valenitabua clarified that while amendments are possible, the existing Constitution cannot be completely discarded.

He added that recommendations have come from a broad range of groups, including indigenous iTaukei, Indo-Fijians, other communities, and government representatives.

Luse Sivo, 65, of Nakalou in Macuata, said the consultations provided everyday citizens with a valuable platform to voice concerns, ask questions, and better understand the review process.

She also acknowledged the Commission for visiting communities directly and addressing issues raised by residents.
