Fiji currently has a total of 2,276 prisoners in all of its 15 Corrections facilities, around the country.
Fiji Corrections Service Acting Commissioner Salote Panapasa says, this number has surpassed their capacity limit.
She says, they have recorded a 3.34 percent rate of overcrowding last year, and is a major concern.
The Fiji Corrections Services has achieved a few significant milestone, one of which is the lowest recidivism rate of 1.74 percent last year.
Acting Commissioner of Fiji Correction Service Salote Panapasa says this is the lowest in the world, and can be attributed to the strong rehabilitation programs offered at the facility.
The Fiji Corrections Service has started a project to construct separate facility to accomodate convicted prisoners, the remand prisoners, and female offenders, particularly in the Labasa correction facility.
With this current position, the Fiji Corrections Service is positive that services will be improved in the future.
