During the month of March this year, there was a notable increase in overall crime, particularly in serious crimes, crimes against women and illicit drug cases.
Serious offenses included attempted rape, robbery, burglary, attempted burglary and aggravated robbery, with common targets being mobile phones, handbags, cash and wallets.
Crimes against women, totaling 220 cases, saw a significant portion committed in domestic settings by spouses and partners. Assault-related offences amounted to 83% of these cases, with notable increases in various divisions.
Crimes against children remained steady at 110 cases, with concerns over domestic settings and sexual assault.
Domestic violence cases against women and children increased by 9%.
Illicit drug cases increased by 67% compared to the previous year, with most involving the possession of marijuana.
The Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew said that there has been efforts to combat these trends through awareness campaigns and community partnerships and emphasised the need for collaborative crime prevention initiatives.
