It was a memorable day for Fiji’s female para-athlete, Merewalesi Vakacegu Rodan, as she was honoured for her success and dedication to para-sports in the country.

Rodan is also part of the feminist diplomacy initiative led by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, and her achievements contribute to the build-up towards the 2024 Olympics and Paralympic Games in France.

Ms Rodan’s achievement in table tennis is a significant milestone for disability inclusiveness in sport, especially for women.

The French embassy dedicated a plaque to honour the achievements and dedication shown by Fiji’s very own inspirational para-athlete.

Ms Rodan is not only an icon, but also a sporting inspiration in the disability inclusiveness seen here in Fiji.

“I’m very honoured, to be selected to be recognised for my participation-rather my achievements in sports”

“From my perspective, it’s a big step taken by the government of France to recognise my achievements as a foreign table tennis athlete,” said Ms Rodan

Ms Rodan participated in the 2016 Summer Paralympics for Fiji in table tennis and has been an integral figure in Fiji when it comes to the advocacy and promotion of disability inclusiveness in sports.

Ms Rodan said that in her journey, she never allowed her disability to be a barrier in participating in all aspects of life and she can see that it has taken her far in sports and other areas.

The French Ambassador to Fiji, François-Xavier Leger said Ms Rodan is not only an icon but also a sporting inspiration of today and accepted their generous invite to be part of something unique such as this.

He added that sports diplomacy for France is significant as they prepare for the Paris 2024 Games and the Paralympic Games.
