President of the Republic of India is hosted by the Head of state

“India is regarded by Fiji as a significant development partner due to our shared knowledge and experience in a number of areas spanning multiple economic sectors, as well as our participation in high-level exchanges, most notably the recent Forum for India-Pacific Island Countries.”

“We sincerely thank the Government of India for its invaluable assistance in building our nation in areas of shared interest.”

At a reception held at the State House yesterday evening for the President of the Republic of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, made these remarks.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, his spouse Mrs. Sulueti Rabuka, cabinet ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests were in attendance at the reception.

According to President Katonivere, there is a friendly and strong friendship between Fiji and India that is based on shared cultural heritage and historical ties.

“The high commission of India in Fiji has maintained diplomatic ties with our country for 75 years, further solidifying our strong bilateral relations in the pursuit of issues of mutual interest.”

In addition, President Katonivere honored the surviving Girmitiyas who attended the reception.

“We acknowledge your valuable contribution to the progress of Fiji as a nation.”

President Murmu responded by stating that Fiji is a unique ally in the South Pacific and that the event being held here last night is a commemoration of the cordial and enduring ties between India and Fiji.

“Since our arrival, the warm welcome and hospitality extended to my delegation and I have been genuinely overwhelming.”

President Katonivere awarded the 50th Anniversary medal to the Girmitiya descendants at the same time, recognizing their contributions to the advancement of both Fiji and humanity in general.
