Cabinet has been updated on the ongoing work and key initiatives of the National Archives of Fiji, which plays a central role in preserving the Government’s documentary heritage and managing official records through a transparent and accountable governance framework.

One of the major undertakings currently in progress is the digitisation of high-demand records. The initial focus is on Indian Indentured Labour records, with 49% of Emigration Passes already digitised. This effort aims to improve access, preservation, and historical research.

Future digitisation priorities include the Polynesian records from 1876–1911—linked to the Melanesian labour trade—and the Land Claims Commission records dating from 1875–1881.

These initiatives are part of a broader push to modernise Fiji’s archival services and ensure the protection of culturally and historically significant documents.
