Significant road rehabilitation and maintenance works are underway on Lakeba Island, with the aim of improving transport connectivity and safety for more than 1,500 residents.
The project includes a range of infrastructure upgrades such as road grading and gravelling, culvert and drainage installations, concrete pavement repairs, coastal protection measures, and enhancements to jetty causeways and foot crossings.
These improvements are intended to support the island’s transport network, which plays a vital role in ensuring access to essential services, facilitating economic activities, and improving emergency response capabilities.
Road works are focused on key transport routes, including the Lakeba Circular Road, the Lakeba Airstrip Road, and access roads leading to communities such as Tubou, Nasaqalau, Vakano, Yadrana, Nukunuku, Waitabu, Waciwaci, and Levuka. Institutional roads serving hospitals, schools, government stations, and utilities are also being upgraded.
Authorities state that once completed, the works will enhance reliability and safety for residents and visitors alike.
