Final preparations are underway in Lakeba as the island is set to welcome people and host a historic traditional installation ceremony for the Tui Nayau, Tu Lau, and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau.
With most developments now 90 per cent complete, the government, through the Lau Provincial Council, has fast-tracked a series of infrastructure upgrades to ensure the island is prepared to welcome the large number of guests expected to attend.
Roko Tui Lau Jioji Kalounivalu says these include the redevelopment of roads and bridges across Lakeba, many of which needed maintenance.
“For most, the road development is near completion, which includes some of the roads we had requested maintained, you can see the roads, bridges, etc. All ready to host the people,” he said.
“Some of these workers have returned to Suva, some are still here to continue the works”, he added.
In addition to infrastructure improvements, the Fiji Police Force has deployed personnel to Lakeba.
Their presence is focused on ensuring public safety and maintaining order in the lead-up to the installation.
Kalounivalu says, Officers are also working to prevent the entry of illicit substances, reinforcing the community’s commitment to preserving the integrity of the event.
“The Police Force are also here to ensure the safety of our people, and prohibit the entry of some unwanted substances that could threaten the island,” he said.
“They arrived on Monday, and are here to protect the vanua, ahead of the installation,” he added.
The installation of the Tui Nayau, Tui Lau, and Sau ni Vanua ko Lau is scheduled for the 8th of July in Nayau and the 10th of July in Tubou, Lakeba.
