Seventeen young people from the Western Disability Centre in Lautoka have completed a two-day Mobile Skills Training programme aimed at building confidence, independence, and future employment opportunities.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on June 11, Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru said all young people need encouragement and guidance to succeed, regardless of their circumstances or abilities.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that no young person is left behind and highlighted the need to create opportunities that promote self-reliance, skills development, and personal growth.

The training programme focused on practical skills, including screen printing, vase making, and tie-and-dye, providing participants with knowledge that could support future income-generating activities and self-employment opportunities.

Minister Saukuru encouraged the graduates to focus on their strengths and determination rather than allowing disability to define their potential.

He reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s commitment to supporting young people with disabilities and ensuring they have access to opportunities that empower them to succeed.

The Minister also acknowledged the National Council for Persons with Disabilities for its partnership in delivering the programme, noting that the collaboration had helped equip participants with practical skills and increased confidence.

National Council for Persons with Disabilities Western Manager Eka Loco said the training had provided participants with valuable opportunities to learn new skills despite the challenges many face in society.

She said the programme would help prepare participants for employment opportunities and income-generating activities that could improve their quality of life and social inclusion.

During the event, Minister Saukuru presented sports equipment to the Western disability team ahead of the Special Olympic Talent Identification Games scheduled for June 13 in Suva.

He urged graduates to continue practising the skills they had learned and to use them to create opportunities for themselves, support their families, and inspire others in their communities.
