Government agencies are intensifying efforts to assist vulnerable individuals living on the streets of Lautoka, with a coordinated approach aimed at providing long-term support and sustainable pathways out of homelessness.
The programme targets people residing along Marine Drive and across the Lautoka city area. Assessments are being conducted to link individuals with appropriate services and help them transition towards stable and dignified living conditions.
This week, Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran met with representatives from the Fiji Police Force, Lautoka City Council, and officials from the Ministries of iTaukei Affairs, Youth and Sports, Health and Medical Services, as well as Social Welfare officers, to review the progress of joint intervention measures.
Several young people have already been relocated to shelters where they will receive accommodation, medical assessments, counselling and life-skills training. Among seven elderly individuals identified during the exercise, three have been admitted to the Lautoka Golden Age Home, while the remaining four opted to return to their families and villages.
Nine young women have also been placed in secure accommodation and will receive ongoing protection and case management services. Individuals requiring mental health support are being referred to suitable care facilities, while those needing specialised assistance, including drug rehabilitation services, are being connected with relevant providers.
Minister Kiran emphasised the importance of families as the primary source of care and protection, encouraging communities to welcome relatives back with compassion and support.
The Ministry will continue collaborating with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs to strengthen family and community reintegration efforts and ensure eligible individuals can access available social protection programmes.
The Ministry also acknowledged the contribution of Medical Services Pacific, the Salvation Army and Empower Pacific in delivering comprehensive support services to those in need.
