Construction of a nature-based seawall in Saolo Village, Bua, is making steady progress as efforts continue to strengthen the community’s protection against coastal threats.

Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry Tomasi Tunabuna visited the Vanua Levu village on Thursday to inspect the ongoing works being carried out under the Ministry’s Coastal Protection Works Programme.

The initiative is designed to help vulnerable coastal communities better withstand shoreline erosion, sea-level rise and other climate-related impacts through environmentally sustainable solutions.

During the visit, Minister Tunabuna commended both villagers and project personnel for their dedication in advancing the project.

He emphasised the value of nature-based infrastructure, noting that such approaches provide lasting coastal defence while working in harmony with the surrounding environment.

He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to assisting communities increasingly affected by coastal erosion and flooding through practical, climate-resilient measures that protect livelihoods, public assets and natural ecosystems.

The Minister also encouraged residents to continue supporting the upkeep of the seawall once completed and to remain active in preserving their coastal environment.

The Saolo Village project forms part of a broader programme of coastal protection initiatives being implemented nationwide, reflecting ongoing Government investment in resilient communities and sustainable infrastructure development.
