Women in two maritime communities in Macuata are set to strengthen their livelihoods and improve access to essential services following the handover of boat and engine assistance under the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management’s Seafaring Entrepreneurial Assistance (SEA) Programme.
The Cikobia Women’s Group received an outboard engine that will support women on Cikobia Island in the district of Udu, Macuata.
The project will enable women to expand fishing activities, transport goods to markets more efficiently and improve connectivity with services on the mainland.
Meanwhile, the Mataqali Nabeka Women’s Group of Nabubu Village in Namuka, Macuata received a fibreglass boat and outboard engine, which will enhance water transportation and support fishing operations, the movement of goods and passengers, emergency response efforts and access to health, education and other essential services.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Mosese Bulitavu encouraged Fijians in rural and maritime areas, to make use of Government assistance programmes designed to improve their livelihoods and strengthen community resilience.
The assistance, valued at more than $25,000, will support income-generating activities, improve transportation and provide safer and more reliable access to markets, health services, education and emergency response for women and their families.
Bulitavu said the SEA Programme continued to play a vital role in creating opportunities for economic participation and self-reliance.
He added that the provision of boats and engines would help communities reduce transportation costs, increase productivity, improve market access and respond more effectively during emergencies and natural disasters.
