The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has called for greater accountability and seriousness in how allegations involving deaths, abuse, and human rights violations linked to security operations are addressed.

Responding to comments made by Rusiate Tudravu and Pio Tikoduadua, FWCC coordinator Shamima Ali said concerns raised about the conduct of police officers, military personnel, or joint operations must never be dismissed or treated lightly.

She stressed that in a democratic system governed by the rule of law, security agencies are granted significant powers, and those powers must be matched by strong responsibility to uphold human rights and protect the public.

Ali said accountability is central to maintaining public trust, warning that attempts to trivialise complaints or describe them as isolated or insignificant risks undermining confidence in institutions and allowing impunity to persist.

She emphasised that the core concern raised by rights advocates is whether the rights and dignity of individuals are protected during joint security operations, adding that independent oversight, transparent investigations, and public accountability are essential safeguards rather than obstacles to effective policing.

Ali further stated that allegations involving assault, torture, excessive use of force, and reported deaths over recent months should never be treated lightly or dismissed.

The FWCC has called on all leaders, particularly those in positions of authority, to approach such issues with seriousness, compassion, and a commitment to accountability.
