Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu says while the 2026-2027 National Budget contains some positive measures for households and businesses, the Opposition will carefully scrutinise government spending and policies before forming its final position.

Seruiratu said the Opposition welcomed the delivery of the budget at a time when many Fijians are facing economic challenges.

“We are thankful that the budget has been delivered as expected. There were lots of expectations, particularly during this very challenging time that we are going through,” he said.

Seruiratu said it was too early to make a full assessment as the Opposition was still reviewing the budget in detail.

He acknowledged that the budget included assistance for individuals and businesses and noted the importance of consistency and predictability in the tax system.

However, he said the Opposition would closely examine government expenditure, stressing that effective management and prioritisation of spending remain key concerns.

“There are things that we will need to scrutinise, particularly expenditure. Management is always a concern when we have intentions on how government money is spent. What is important is prioritisation and looking at the level of expenditure.”

Seruiratu also said the Opposition would assess whether the policies outlined in the budget would genuinely support economic growth.

“It’s important to grow the economy, definitely. But it’s how you’re going to do it and what other incentives are behind that intention. That’s what we will need to get into when we look at the details.”
